Lollapalooza, coming from a word that means “an extraordinary or unusual thing,” was founded in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band. Originally more punk-centric, the festival toured across the US and Canada and featured some of the most popular acts of the early 1990s like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, and Nine Inch Nails. By the late 1990s, the festival had began to lose the interest of music fans, and it ended its original run in 1997. An attempted revival by Farrell in 2003 was met with lukewarm reception, prompting him to shelve all plans for a 2004 event as well.
2005 saw the birth of the Lollapalooza we are all familiar with today. C3 Presents and Farrell partnered with the city of Chicago to move Lollapalooza to its current home in Grant Park. Generating millions in revenue for the city every summer, the festival is currently contracted to stay until 2018, but its positive monetary impact on Chicago will hopefully see it staying much longer. Over the past ten years, the festival has hosted a wealth of diverse and popular artists, including Daft Punk, My Morning Jacket, Umphrey’s McGee, Jack White, Ben Folds, Queens of the Stone Age, Chance The Rapper, Lorde, and also artists who are now internationally known household names like Lady Gaga. Lollapalooza also went international in 2010, with Chile, Argentina, and Brazil all hosting their own versions of the festival. The first European incarnation comes to Germany this autumn.
We hope to see you in Grant Park this July! Follow Lollapalooza on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for all the latest updates and lineup additions!
